Star Drill

Tags:

The STAR DRILL is a great way to develop the arms of your infielders.  At the younger ages, throwing the ball around the infield can be a challenge for some players.  From age 13 to 15, there are likely more throwing errors in the infield than fielding errors.  This is a challenging drill for the infielders and adds an element of competition that will keep the interest of your infielders.

You will need 4 infielders at the positions plus a catcher.  Put a baserunner at first and allow him to take a lead.  He can begin running when the coach hits the ball.  At the older teen ages, or with young teen travel teams, put the runner at second base.  The goal is to get the ball home before the runner gets there.

  1. Coach hits a ground ball to the shortstop.
  2. Shortstop throws to first base.
  3. First baseman to third base.
  4. Third baseman to second base.
  5. Second base to catcher.

No need to have the runner sliding or causing a collision at home.  Just have them run behind the catcher.  The goal is to get the ball home before the runner gets there.
